Biden Claims His Border Is More Secure Than Trump's - Is That True?

Biden Claims His Border Is More Secure Than Trump's - Is That True?

Most of the attention given to the June 27 Trump-Biden debate centered around the state of President Biden’s mental health.

The debate was also the occasion of an incredible claim – that Biden has improved the border.

Preposterous, you say? Of course it is.

But some of our fellow Americans are rather uninformed and may fall for it.

So it requires some attention.

Moderator Jake Tapper, to his credit, asked Biden this question:

TAPPER: “President Biden, a record number of migrants have illegally crossed the southern border on your watch, overwhelming border states and overburdening cities such as New York and Chicago, and in some cases causing real safety and security concerns. Given that, why should voters trust you to solve this crisis?”

BIDEN: “Because we worked very hard to get a bipartisan agreement that not only changed all of that, it made sure that we are in a situation where you had no circumstance where they could come across the border with the number of border police there are now.”

Biden refers to the Senate’s failed bipartisan border proposal. But what about the three years of Biden Border Policy before that?

Beginning on Inauguration Day 2021, Biden drastically reversed the Trump border policies and the results were plain to see for all who were paying attention. Biden only talks tough on the border now because it’s election time.

We significantly increased the number of asylum officers.”

Congratulations.

“Significantly – by the way, the Border Patrol endorsed me, endorsed my position.”

The U.S. Border Patrol is a government agency that doesn’t officially endorse any candidates.

“In addition to that, we found ourselves in a situation where, when he was president, he was taking – separating babies from their mothers, putting them in cages, making sure the families were separated. That’s not the right way to go.”

I agree we shouldn’t separate families – we should deport them together.

Even Snopes has admitted that the cages were built by the Obama administration.

“Since I’ve changed the law, what’s happened? I’ve changed it in a way that now you’re in a situation where there are 40% fewer people coming across the border illegally. It’s better than when he left office.”

Really?

“And I’m going to continue to move until we get the total ban on the – the total initiative relative to what we’re going to do with more Border Patrol and more asylum officers.”

Huh?

As for Biden’s claim of a 40% drop in unauthorized border crossings, the Mainstream Media has also reported a decrease.

From CBS:

Illegal crossings along the U.S. southern border fell to a 3-year low in June following President Biden's drastic move to curtail asylum and continued efforts by Mexico to stop migrants heading north, according to preliminary Customs and Border Protection data obtained by CBS News.”

“Border Patrol processed approximately 84,000 migrants who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border without authorization in June, the lowest monthly level since Mr. Biden took office in January 2021, when the agency reported just over 75,000 migrant apprehensions, the internal statistics show.”

Let’s look at the government’s own statistics on “Southwest Land Border Encounters” from October 2020 to May 2024.

For the first few months, Trump was still president, with under 80,000 encounters per month.

Biden took office January 20, 2021. By the end of February, the number of encounters was climbing and had already passed 100,000.

It continued to rise until reaching a high of over 300,000 in December of 2023. In that month, the Biden administration made a deal with the Mexican President AMLO – confirmed by AMLO in a 60 Minutes interview – and the monthly totals started to drop.

Then there was the order in June, referred to by CBS, which brought encounters down to an administration low of more than 80,000 – still higher than it was in the last few months of the Trump administration.

The Biden administration has presided over a weaponized border designed to bring in millions of foreigners in a short period of time. And it’s been successful.

If Biden or any other contemporary Democrat wins in November, we can expect these policies to continue and numbers to increase again.
