WATCH: Gangbanger Crashes Into Big Rig While Smuggling Illegals In Pickup Bed
A known gang member was arrested for smuggling illegal aliens after he crashed a pickup truck into a big rig tractor while fleeing from police in Texas, authorities say.
On Tuesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) released footage of the dangerous pursuit, which unfolded on April 24 in Webb County, near the southern border.
TxDPS troopers attempted to pull over a suspicious vehicle when the driver began taking evasive action that jeopardized the safety of other motorists.
The suspect sped down the shoulder of an on-ramp to Interstate 35, narrowly avoiding other cars in their designated lanes.
He later exited the highway, and while attempting to make an illegal left turn after hopping a curb, the driver slammed the pickup into a moving semi truck.
The driver and passengers then bailed out and tried to escape on foot but were quickly apprehended.
The suspected smuggler was identified as Arturo Yepez, a known Pistolero gang member who resides in Laredo.
“Troopers arrested him and charged him with evading arrest and two counts of smuggling of persons with the likelihood of [Serious Bodily Injury]/Death. Troopers located two illegal immigrants from Mexico hiding in the bed of the truck,” TxDPS spokesman Lt. Chris Olivarez explained in a statement.
It is unclear if the driver of the big rig suffered any injuries in the collision.
The illegal aliens were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol.
