An African migrant who claimed to be a minor during his arrest for beating and robbing a man with accomplices was found to be lying about his age by French authorities, according to reports.

The brutal assault unfolded at around 6:45 a.m. on Sunday morning in Valence, a commune in southeastern France.

The victim, a 35-year-old man from the commune of Valetin, was on his way home after a night out with friends when he was jumped by three suspects near the Polygone district.

The assailants first tried to force the man into their car before savagely beating him, ripping a silver chain off his neck, and leaving him badly injured on the ground.

Police arrived and apprehended two of the suspects, but the third fled the scene.

"The first is said to be Algerian and 16 years old, the second is of Tunisian nationality and 22 years old," France Bleu reports.

"Both had traces of blood on them and a search by the police allowed them to find the silver chain torn from the passerby. One of the attackers had hidden it in his underpants."

The 'underage' suspect was medically examined and a bone x-ray revealed that he is likely closer to 21 or 22 years old.

The victim was treated for unspecified serious injuries and legal proceedings are ongoing.

Migrants often lie about their ages to European authorities.
