Gretchen Whitmer's Views on ICE: A Trick Not a Treat

Gretchen Whitmer's Views on ICE: A Trick Not a Treat

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is running for re-election. And since the election and Halloween are almost here, it’s the perfect time to remind voters that this Democrat’s radical views on immigration enforcement agencies are spooky-creepy-scary.

During the summer of 2018, at an outdoor rally of progressives in Lansing, the conversation between a fella and then-candidate-for-governor Whitmer went like this:

Questioner: Do you think we should abolish ICE, though?
Whitmer: I think ICE is doing a fundamentally cruel, unconstitutional, undemocratic work.
Questioner repeats: Do you think we should abolish it?
Whitmer: Yeah. I think our governor needs to stand up.
Questioner: We should abolish ICE. Thank you, Ma’am.
Whitmer: Nods.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, has the mission of protecting the United States from cross-border crime and illegal immigration – both which routinely threaten national security, social cohesiveness, and public safety. The work of ICE includes front-lines investigations of criminal enterprises like money laundering, human trafficking, gang violence, and drug cartels. As to the cartels, anyone who even casually follows the news knows we, as a country, are in the deadly throes of an opioid crisis. Drug overdose is now the cause of death for countless Americans. In fact, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently seized four million lethal doses of fentanyl in Michigan and Ohio.

Does that woman from Michigan realize that the DEA and ICE have an interagency agreement to better coordinate drug investigations? Abolish this important partnership? At a time like this? Really?

And when comes to immigration, Whitmer always puts the interests of globalists first by uttering mindless, sweeping pronouncements. Consider:

- Whitmer criticized President Donald Trump’s plan, in 2019, to reduce the number of refugees allowed to resettle into the United States, claiming that refugees historically enhance Michigan “socially, culturally, and economically.”

(Please visit https://refugeeresettlementwatch.org/ for a different, fact-filled perspective.)

- When President Trump ordered the U.S. Census Bureau to exclude illegal aliens from the 2020 census count, Whitmer blasted the President by claiming he was “using hateful, discriminatory rhetoric.”

In both of these instances, the then-Commander-in-Chief was fleshing out an America First doctrine which, to long-suffering taxpayers who have been asked to subsidize, without complaint, every single endeavor that benefits a class of individuals who undermine our way of life and rule-of-law, his stances were political manna from Heaven. Finally! Someone in power noticed the deplorables’ burden.

Which is completely unlike Gretchen Whitmer, who has been using government, for the past four years, as a blunt, communism-style instrument to control, weaken, and destroy millions of Michiganders liberties, health, and property, and who has no compunction about aiding and abetting foreign-born criminals.

In contrast, Tudor Dixon, Whitmer’s GOP gubernatorial opponent, has stated that, if elected, she would implement a statewide ban on sanctuary cities and require, under stiff penalties for not doing so, local government units to comply with federal immigration laws. As of this writing, Wayne, Kalamazoo, Kent, and Ingham counties have enacted “sanctuary policies.” The city of Lansing, where the Michigan state capitol is located and where the Governor governs, refuses to comply with immigration detainers (Form I-247), which denies ICE agents the opportunity to interview incarcerated aliens.

The Center for Immigration Studies explains that “a detainer is the primary tool used by ICE to gain custody of criminal aliens for deportation. It is a notice to another law enforcement agency that ICE intends to assume custody of an alien and includes information on the alien's previous criminal history, immigration violations, and potential threat to public safety or security.”

Abolish ICE? Really, Whitmer?
