J.D. Vance: 'America Is Not Just an Idea - It Is Our Homeland'
Ohio Senator J.D. Vance has been selected as Trump’s vice presidential running mate.
Border Hawk does not endorse political candidates, but we can and should analyze what they say and promote.
How is J.D. Vance on the “National Question”?
The National Question is a complex of issues including immigration (legal and illegal), citizenship, and national identity.
Vance’s marriage to a non-Christian, a daughter of Indian immigrants, has been questioned. Does that make him more sympathetic towards mass immigration of Asian Indians and others?
I don’t know.
But I have been impressed with National Question-related statements Vance has made in recent years.
It seems that J.D. has thought about these issues more than most politicians.
Vance has only been in the Senate since last year but has a 90% rating from NumbersUSA.
A recent Alternet headline declared that “JD Vance called Native Americans the 'enemy' and Indigenous Peoples Day a 'fake holiday.'"
What’s that all about ?
“Indigenous Peoples Day” is a fake holiday, with its only purpose being to replace Columbus Day.
As for “the enemy” quote, Vance was talking about “enemy territory” in the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795). In that war, the U.S. military under General Anthony Wayne fought a confederation of Indian tribes. (Full disclosure: one of my ancestors fought under Wayne in that conflict.)
Vance was speaking out against the cancellation of General Wayne by taking his name off a national forest in Ohio.
Kudos to Vance for defending American heritage.
In a recent Senate hearing, Sen. Vance questioned Fed Chair Jerome Powell on the effect of immigration on the wages and housing costs of Americans.
“[R]ather than bringing in a large number of new immigrants, why not try to boost wages in a way that brings some of those workers off the sidelines?” Vance asked.
In Vance’s acceptance speech at the GOP convention, he talked about the U.S. being “flooded” with “illegal immigrants” so “citizens had to compete with people who shouldn’t even be here for precious housing."
"We won’t import foreign labor, we’ll fight for American citizens," Vance pledged.
That sounds good.
Vance highlighted his Appalachian family heritage. His family hailed from one of the ten poorest counties in the United States, and yet, its residents are looked down upon by the media, who call them “privileged." [Hint: It’s because they’re white.]
Vance took on the 'America as an Idea' concept:
“One of the things that you hear people say sometimes is that America is an idea. To be clear, America was indeed founded on brilliant ideas like the rule of law and religious liberty, things written into the fabric of our constitution and our nation, but America is not just an idea.
"It is a group of people with a shared history and a common future. It is, in short, a nation. It is part of that tradition, of course, that we welcome newcomers, but when we allow newcomers into our American family, we allow them on our terms. That’s the way we preserve the continuity of this project for 250 years past and hopefully 250 years into the future.”
Vance discussed two sides of that equation – his wife Usha, daughter of Indian immigrants, and his ancestral cemetery in eastern Kentucky in which he plans to be buried.
Speaking of his Appalachian folk, Vance pointed out, “They are very hard-working people, and they are very good people, the kind of people who would give you the shirt off their back even if they cannot afford enough to eat, and our media calls them privileged and looks down on them. But they love this country not only because it is a good idea, but because, in their bones, they know that is their home, and it will be their children’s home, and they would die fighting to protect it. That is the source of America’s greatness.
"Now that is not just an idea, my friends, that’s not just a set of principles, even though the ideas and the principles are great. That is a homeland. That is our homeland.”
Once again, Border Hawk cannot endorse candidates.
But it’s encouraging to see a VP candidate who recognizes that America is not just an idea, it’s our homeland.
In Vance’s own words, “It is a group of people with a shared history and a common future.”
